Sharks Compete at 2010 Short Course Nationals

As we get back into the swing of practices here at the Y, we want to share some of the highlights from YMCA Nationals. This season the Sharks sent 27 swimmers to Florida, and experienced unprecedented success.

The Sharks had their first relays qualify for finals, the girls 800 Free Relay and the boys 400 Medley Relay both qualified in the top sixteen.  History was made with the two relays made up of Alison O'Connor, Chloé Conjares, Emily Pedrick, Sara Craft, Austin Taylor, Sean Murphy, Leo Lim, and Taylor Adams.

The great swims continued with Sara Craft finishing 21st in the 1000 and 22nd in the 1650.  In addition the Sharks had their first individual female night swim with Ellie Huelbig finishing 23rd in the 200 Butterfly.  Congratulations Ladies!! Our boys were also successful on the individual level with both Austin Taylor and Leo Lim qualifying for finals.  Austin Taylor, who also led off the 400 Medley Relay, finished 24th in the 200 Backstroke.

The Sharks greatest individual accomplishments were delivered by Leo Lim.  Leo qualified to compete at finals in all four of his events.  In only his second winter Y Nationals Leo established himself as one of the best young swimmers in the country.  By finishing 8th in the 200 IM Leo became the first Shark to ever compete in a Championship Final at Y Nationals.  His success continued as he finished 13th in the 100 Butterfly, 10th in the 400 IM, and 10th in the 200 Butterfly.  In total Leo scored 29 of the Sharks 31 points at the meet.  The Sharks finished 30th out of more than 250 teams.

As we look forward to the Long Course Season, we here at the Y are excited to continue our growth on the local, state, and national level.  The only question to ask yourself is Y NOT?

Sharks represent NJ at 2010 USA Zone Championships

The Wyckoff Sharks had four team members chosen out of the many applicants to represent NJ at the USA Zone Championships. This is a great honor and Michelle Kim, Julia Perry, Kristen Lee and Gene Han had some of the best swims of the meet.

There is no time like the first day to put a stamp on the meet, and Michelle Kim did just that with a 1st place finish in the 400 IM. Michelle followed that up with top 8 finishes in the 200 IM(5th), 100 BK(2nd).  Michelle was also selected to be a member of the 400 Free Relay, 200 Free Relay, 400 Medley Relay, and the 200 Medley Relay, all of which scored at the meet.  Julia Perry started the meet right where she left off, with a best time in the 100 Back.  In doing so Julia finished 8th and also qualified for this Summers YMCA Long Course Championships.  Julia also demonstrated her versatility by swimming the anchor leg of the 400 Medley Relay that took 5th place overall.  Kristen Lee was our youngest member to swim at Zones this year.  Kristen swam the 50 BK and was able to have a best time in that event.  We are looking forward to some more fast swims from Kristen in the future.  Gene Han was our lone boy competing at the Zone Championships this year.  Gene had a great meet finishing 8th in the 100 breast, 6th in the 200 breast, 7th in the 200 Medley Relay and 7th in the 400 Medley Relay. Gene qualified for his first Long Course Nationals.

So far the Sharks have 35 swimmers set to represent the Y in Maryland for the 2010 Long Course YMCA Nationals.  Keep up the great work!!!
